About The Fieltro Collection

This collection brings together textiles and precious metal using traditional textile techniques such as feltmaking to create innovative accessories for the body and interior. My work explores the amalgamation of spontaneity and consistency and my pieces are frequently inspired by aspects of serendipity in the surrounding environment such as mildew on glass roof panels, together with intuitive manipulation of the fabric itself.

The collection exploits the inherent qualities of handmade felt, one of the oldest known textiles. I use natural, renewable materials to construct the fabric, while encasing silk and silver wire to provide sinuous compositions and spontaneous additions of colour. I am seeking to ensure that Fairtrade materials are used wherever possible, which are obtained ethically and from sustainable sources.

To a large extent the feltmaking technique can be controlled, however ‘happy accidents’ occasionally emerge. I believe these enhance the alluring qualities of such a material.

Having initially trained as a jewellery designer, I have developed several invaluable skills such as an attention to detail and confidence working with various materials. My affinity to textiles evolved from a mixed-media textile elective during the second year of my degree, where I encountered a range of textile processes.

Both body and interior collections investigate notions of translucency and layering. I believe the work is enhanced further when placed within its intended context; scarves flourishing when placed around one’s shoulders, and hangings generating extraordinary visual impact when suspended within a contemporary public or private space and immersed in natural light.
